Plant-spacing calculator
Estimate a square planting grid for a rectangular garden bed, using the spacing you choose.
How the estimate works
Columns = floor(bed width ÷ spacing). Rows = floor(bed length ÷ spacing). Plants = columns × rows. Plant centres sit half a spacing from the bed edges.
Worked example
An 8 × 4 ft bed with 12 in spacing fits 8 rows and 4 columns, or 32 plants, under this square-grid convention.
Before you order
- Spacing is measured from one plant centre to the next. Use spacing appropriate to your crop or cultivar.
- This square grid leaves half a spacing at each outer edge. Access paths and irregular areas are not deducted.
- If a bed dimension is smaller than the spacing, no full grid cell fits in that direction.
Common questions
Does this use staggered rows?
No. This version uses a square grid. Staggered planting needs a different layout calculation.
Does it recommend plant spacing?
No. Enter the spacing from the plant label or reliable growing guidance.
